Russia backs Cuba’s demand to end US blockade

Moscow, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underscored—during a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez—firm support for the Caribbean nation in its demands to end the United States blockade, the Foreign Ministry reported.

“Lavrov confirmed unwavering support for Havana’s just demand for the immediate and complete cessation of the commercial, economic, financial, and—more recently—energy blockade imposed by the United States,” the Russian diplomatic agency detailed in a statement released to the press.

The head of Russian diplomacy also urged that Cuba be removed from “the odious US list of so-called state sponsors of terrorism.”

Furthermore, the minister “condemned the extraterritorial nature of the unilateral restrictive measures imposed against the ‘Island of Freedom’.”

In this regard, he noted that the meeting confirmed the intention to continue dialogue and cooperation “with the aim of strengthening the Russian-Cuban strategic partnership, as well as ensuring global and regional security and shaping a fairer, multipolar world order based on respect for state sovereignty and the right of nations to choose their own path of development.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Lavrov held talks with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio. The meeting lasted approximately one hour.

Since January of this year, Washington has stepped up its actions against Havana and intensified the economic, commercial, and financial blockade it has imposed on the island for more than six decades.
