The first stage of the two-day vote was extended from Friday to Sunday after a cyberattack slowed down the messages sent to the electoral process’s voting platform, BFM TV reported.
The vote coincides with a rally by Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the La France Insoumise (LFI) party, in Clermont-Ferrand in south-central France, while former Prime Ministers Edouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal appear in Dijon, in the Cote-d’Or department.
The aim is to elect a single social-democratic candidate from among Jerome Guedj, Emmanuel Maurel, Segolene Royal, Olivier Faure, and Raphael Glucksmann, the latter considered the favorite for the first round.
The second and decisive round is scheduled for October 17-18.
On Friday, some 110,000 voters went to the polls; one of the primary’s objectives is to gauge the electorate’s preference for a candidate from that political current.
The presidential election is scheduled for April 2027.
