This appeal comes as the UN General Assembly prepares to vote, on October 27 and 28, once again on a resolution against “the economic, commercial, and financial blockade unjustly and arbitrarily imposed by the US administration against Cuba.”
The statement calls on “all countries that have consistently stood in solidarity with the Cuban people to continue supporting—as they have for six decades—their freedom to choose their own destiny, with the dignity and courage that history values and recognizes in the people of Marti and Fidel.”
It denounces the malicious campaign led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio—who, in addition to the energy boycott currently enforced by the Donald Trump administration, has leveled the infamous accusation that Cuba sponsors terrorism.
“Through such slanders, and by globalizing the blockade via coercive measures against nations that wish to establish economic, commercial, and financial relations—including investments—with Cuba, the US administration seeks to neutralize the solidarity-based support for the just demands of the Cuban people,” the statement adds.
Signatories to the declaration include former Foreign Minister Hector Bejar; poets Marco Martos, Hildebrando Perez Grande, Juan Cristobal, Rosina Valcarcel, Winston Orrillo, Sonia Luz Carrillo, and Ricardo Falla.
Also among the signatories are writers Eduardo Gonzalez Viaña and Jose Luis Ayala; designer Jesus Ruiz Durand; and visual artists Bruno Portuguez, Fanny Palacios Izquierdo, Ever Arrascue, Sonia Estrada, and Sonia Delgado. Also present were the president of Solicuba Pensamiento y Cultura, Gustavo Espinoza; filmmaker Pilar Roca; journalists Rosario Arroyo and Manuel Robles; singer-songwriter Marcela Perez Silva; sociologists Vicente Otta and Eduardo Arroyo; and actress Delfina Paredes.
