Mining leader calls on soldiers to join Bolivian people
La Paz, May 21 (Prensa Latina) The executive secretary of the Confederation of Mining Workers of Bolivia, Orlando Gutierrez, called on the military to be on the people's side and against the coup government of Jeanine Añez.
He explained that amid the current Covid-19 quarantine, 'we cannot continue to watch the brother who has nothing to eat and this government uses the Armed Forces and the National Police' with repressive ends due to social discontent.
Gutierrez told radio stations in the southern city of Potosi that 'within the Armed Forces, within the garrisons are our brothers, our children, and I think that they will be on the side of their people and will not be on the side of this coup government'.
Previously, the leader charged that Chilean entrepreneurial sectors are trying to seize Bolivia's lithium, whose exploitation by the State had been started by the government of overthrown President Evo Morales, so he called on the Armed Forces to defend the national heritage.
He reminded the soldiers of their constitutional obligation of 'defending Bolivia and all its citizens, and not foreign interests'.
