Parliamentary commission approves withdrawals from pension funds
7 de julio de 2020, 19:45Santiago, Chile, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) In a ruling that was described as historic and that may cause new clashes between the Chilean Government and the opposition, the Constitutional Commission of the House of Deputies approved a bill to allow withdrawals from pension funds.
The initiative, promoted by lawmakers from the Social Green Regionalist Federation (FRVS) and independent parliamentarians, establishes that workers can withdraw up to 10% of the funds that they have deposited for years in pension fund insurers, which are considered 'untouchable' by the Government.
The leader of the FRVS-IND bench, lawmaker Alejandra Sepulveda, described the initiative as very important to provide the middle class with liquidity.
For his part, parliamentarian Esteban Velasquez, from the same party, noted that it is a bill limited to the withdrawal of funds at times of pandemic under the state decree of catastrophe, but it is a big step towards a deep reform of the pension system, and makes it clear that the funds belong to the workers and not to the pension fund insurers.
One of the main demands of the vast movement of protesters that started on October 18, 2019, in Chile was the elimination of the pension fund insurers, which have profited from the money of millions of workers who have received pensions that do not meet their basic needs.
