El Salvador eradicates millions of flying locusts
San Salvador, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) The Salvadoran Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock today confirmed the elimination of six and a half million flying locusts in the municipality of San Luis Talpa (south).
According to the National Directorate of Plant Health, this is the largest outbreak of the voracious plague since the alert issued in early July by the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health.
These locusts (Schistocerca piceifrons piceifrons) were eliminated before they could reach their maximum level of organization, grouped in sleeves, when they can devour up to 100 tons of crop in a day.
The phytosanitary authorities defended the use of Malathion, an insecticide with a low level of toxicity that controls both nymphs and adult specimens.
The actions to eliminate the pest are carried out by technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, experts from the National Center for Agricultural and Forestry Technology, and members of the Salvadoran Armed Forces.
