German minister protests against US threats over gas pipeline
Berlin, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed surprise and concern today after a telephone conversation with his counterpart from the United States, Mike Pompeo, regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Maas' statements in this capital allude to a dialogue held on Sunday during which he protested a letter that three US senators sent to the authorities of the port of Sassnitz, on the German island of Rugen, who are involved in the construction of the gas pipeline.
In the letter, the members of the Republican Party threaten operators and shareholders with a ban on entering the United States and with the freezing of their assets in that country.
The action caused outrage in different German political parties and strengthened the call for countermeasures.
On Friday, the head of the economy and energy committee of the Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament), Klaus Ernst, dismissed the threats as 'the height of insolence.
According to Ernst, the text is a direct affront to the city of Sassnitz, as well as the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and shows that the protests of the federal government against the US sanctions did not work.
The politician urged the German Executive to summon the US ambassador and to present effective countermeasures and apply them if necessary, the Russian news agency Sputnik stressed at the time.
Last December, the works were paralyzed before the approval by the United States Senate of sanctions against the Swiss company Allseas, in charge of the construction of an infrastructure that, after its completion, will transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
Through two branches it will carry Russian oil to Germany, passing through territorial waters or exclusive economic zones of Finland, Russia, Sweden and Denmark.
The high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, previously condemned the intentions of the northern nation and affirmed that Washington's strategy is in violation of international law.
