Islamic State attack causes casualties in Iraq
Baghdad, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) An attack by the Islamic State in Iraq left nine dead, three civilians and six members of the Popular Mobilization Units (al-Hashd al-Shaabi), according to an Army statement released on Sunday.
The event took place on Saturday north of the capital, when a vehicle triggered explosive devices planted by the extremists.
Gendarmes and al-Hashd al-Shaabi fighters had arrived in the area as part of an investigative operation and were ambushed by the radicals.
The attackers fled and found refuge in the nearby mountains, Colonel Mohammad al-Bazi said.
The Islamic State came to occupy a third of Iraqi territory in 2014, including some major cities.
In December 2017, the Army and the Popular Mobilization Units, with support of Pentagon-provided intelligence, completely expelled the extremists from the urban centers, although there are still operational cells like the one that carried out the attack.
The recent action by the terrorists is the second by the group since the beginning of this month when an assault on a military post in Baghdad left 11 dead and eight wounded.
