World leaders insist on the need for climate adaptation
25 de enero de 2021, 17:11Amsterdam, Jan 25 (Prensa Latina) Leaders from several countries and international organizations agreed today on the need to include adaptation to climate change in the plans for recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As the planet faces this epidemiological situation and its consequences, it is necessary to continue adapting ourselves to climate change, which is occurring and affecting the lives of hundreds of millions of people, noted the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.
During his speech at the International Summit on Climate Adaptation, arranged by this country and held virtually, he insisted on the need to discuss how to recover better, be stronger and come out of these crises together.
He considers it necessary to achieve more resilient infrastructures and improve disaster risk management, especially in countries with the most vulnerable populations.
Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon stated that the pillars of this summit are based mainly on the search for greater mobilization of resources and collaboration to protect the most vulnerable.
Meanwhile, the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for more investment in resilience for developing countries, and recalled that they need to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change.
He affirmed that supporting climate adaptation is a moral and social imperative, since in recent years some 11,000 natural disasters (due to meteorological, climate and water-related hazards) have killed over 450,000 people.
Presidents such as Sebastian Piñera from Chile, Alberto Fernandez from Argentina, the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, and high-level representatives from the United Kingdom, Ghana, Kenya, the Marshall Islands, India, China and Bangladesh, among others, took part in the virtual meeting and presented their countries' initiatives.
