Uruguayan nurses called for more support to fight Covid-19

Montevideo, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) The Association of Nurses of Uruguay on Sunday called for more hiring of personnel and support to be able to provide better assistance to Covid-19 patients at emergency wards and intensive care units as health facilities are overwhelmed with cases.

The National Emergency System on Sunday reported 2,339 new Covid-19 cases, so the number of active patients rose to 23,978; 384 of them are in red-level intensive care units because they take up 44 percent of its 867 operational beds.

Just as intensivists did before, the nursing union called for the hiring of more professionals through established funding mechanisms such as the Coronavirus Fund.

It also called to advanced students’ supportive and volunteer action and called on all health institutions to provide psychosocial support to those in charge of directly assisting Covid-19 patients, ‘given the high level of stress caused by the demands of this job.’
