Brazilian state of Rio lacks Covid-19 vaccines

Brasilia, May 2 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro was reportedly obliged to suspended vaccination of the second dose of the Chinese made CoronaVac, due to the lack of immunizers.

‘The city of Rio de Janeiro was able to keep vaccinating residents, but the technical reserve ran out, as had already happened in other municipalities and states in Brazil,’ the state government said in a statement.

According to the Health Ministry, there will be no available replacement of CoronaVac in sufficient quantity before the scheduled deadline (10 days)’.

According to an official statemenet, only bedridden and elderly people over 70 years of age who received the first injection are being vaccinated.

Brazil started on January 17 a National Immunization Plan with the CoronaVac and British Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines.

According to the count carried out by a media consortium, based on data from the states, 7.4 percent of the Brazilian population (15 million 677 thousand 543 people) received the two doses, while 14.95 percent (31 million 667 thousand 346) received the first shot.
