India takes measures against mucormycosis disease

New Delhi, May 13 (Prensa Latina) India is taking measures to increase the availability of Amphotericin B to fight against mucormycosis, a health complication following the Covid-19 disease, it was reported in the capital.

Some states of the country are witnessing a surge in demand for the drug, which doctors are actively prescribing for the disease, All India Radio informed.

The supply situation is expected to improve with additional imports of the drug and growth of its domestic production, the source referred.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection of the sinuses, brain or lungs.

It occurs in patients with weak immune systems and conditions such as Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-AIDS, burns, poorly controlled diabetes, leukemia and lymphoma, prolonged use of steroids, metabolic acidosis, malnutrition and the use of some medications.

Mucormycosis has a high mortality rate and the risk of dying depends on the area of the body affected and the patient’s general health.
