Russia warns of regional danger due to IS in Afghanistan

Moscow, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that the Islamic State (IS) movement concentrates its forces in Afghanistan and in border areas with Central Asian countries.

In the text, broadcast on Internet by the Gazeta.ru newspaper, Mr. Medvedev pointed out that IS leadership explicitly announced its plans to extend influence throughout the region.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 terror attacks in New York, Mr. Medvedev recalled that the United States, during its nearly two-decade invasion in Afghanistan, was unable to eliminate IS members who moved en masse from Syria to Afghanistan.

He noted that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan only fueled IS goals, which continues to pose a major threat to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Plus, he cleared out that at the end of this last conflict, Washington did not achieve its objective announced after 9/11 by then President George W. Bush, of defeating terrorism in Afghanistan.
