Prominent former prosecutor becomes Peru’s interior minister

Lima, Nov 4 (Prensa Latina) Former Peruvian Prosecutor Avelino Guillen, accuser of former President Alberto Fujimori in the trials in which he was convicted, was sworn in on Thursday as the new Minister of the Interior in the presence of President Pedro Castillo.

The lawyer replaces Luis Barrenzuela on Tuesday after a media scandal for having a party in his house despite bans on meetings as a measure to fight Covid-19, an impediment he should enforce as Minister of the Interior.

Guillen gained domestic and international prestige after he effectively based the charges for which Fujimori was sentenced in 2009 to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity.

He was recently harassed by a violent right-wing extremist group linked to parties from that trend, such as Fuerza Popular opposition party, whose leader is Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the imprisoned former president, an event that is under investigation.
