Rains and landslides cause 11 deaths in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) Sri Lanka today reported 11 people dead and thousands displaced as a result of long and heavy rains and consequent landslides experienced in the country.

According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC), five deaths were caused by drowning, four due to landslides and two victims of electrocution, reflected the Daily News newspaper.

Extreme weather also caused damage to houses and crops in the last three days. In addition, several roads were rendered unusable in different parts of the country.

Navy relief teams last night rescued 71 people who were trapped by floods following heavy rainfall in several areas.

The rescued people were moved to safe places and provided with assistance as relief operations continue, Ceylon Today newspaper said.

In addition, the country’s Navy has another 60 relief teams ready for deployment in the near future.

A fleet of 10 Air Force helicopters and aircraft is on standby for any weather-related emergency, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana said. Special forces teams were also enlisted to provide assistance.
