Argentine minister to file criminal complaint

Buenos Aires, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Minister of Environment, Juan Cabandié, announced today that he will file a criminal complaint for the disaster that occurred in a protected natural area in the province of Chubut, where hundreds of penguin chicks died.

“We are going to criminally denounce those responsible for this irreparable environmental disaster. At this moment the Environmental Control Brigade is traveling to Chubut to inspect the field where this crime occurred,” the official specified in his official Twitter account.

Cabandié traveled to the Punta Tombo Natural Protected Area, where a family conflict triggered the massacre of 292 Magellanic penguins and 140 nests with chicks’ eggs.

The news is on the front pages of several press media while the Ministry of the Environment sent the Environmental Control Brigade (BCA) to the place to inspect the presumed infractions to Law 22421 for the conservation of fauna.

“We are committed to animal welfare and that is why we are going to seek all the regulatory and management tools so that these acts of mistreatment are punished and do not happen again”, Cabandié emphasized.

The natural reserve of Punta Tombo has one of the largest continental colonies of Magellanic penguins on the planet, it covers some 210 hectares and is located on the Atlantic coast.
