UK admits it has no evidence on Russian deployment in Donbass

liz-truss-5-300x200
London, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Wednesday has admitted that the United Kingdom still lacks evidence about an alleged deployment of Russian troops in the popular republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Speaking to Sky News, Truss said that the situation is ambiguous due to the large amount of fake news circulating on the Internet, and the British intelligence services are trying to verify what is happening.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who on Monday, February 21, recognized the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk and signed several cooperation agreements with those republics located in Ukraine’s Donbass region, denied on Tuesday that he had announced an imminent sending of Russian troops to those territories.

In response to Moscow’s decision, London, the United States and the European Union announced economic sanctions against Russia, which in the case of the United Kingdom, they are directed against five Russian banks and three Russian millionaires whom it accuses of having links with the Kremlin.

The head of British diplomacy assured, however, that London has prepared more punitive measures against the Eurasian country, in the event that a full-scale Russian military invasion against Ukraine occurs.
