Cuba calls for extreme measures to fight off Covid-19

Havana, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and scientists on Tuesday urged to take extreme hygienic-sanitary measures ahead of the increased Covid-19 cases reported lately.

According to the Granma newspaper, Cuban scientists forecast an increased Covid-19 positive and hospitalized cases.

From the ¨Pedro Kourí¨ Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT, in Spanish), DSc. Daniel González pointed out there is a decreased number of Covid-19 seriously ill cases and deaths, which it should not be related only to the Omicron variant.

Mr. González said this behavior lies in the levels of immunity of the Cuban population thanks to homegrown vaccines and campaign, which has allowed to a high percentage of protection from the virus.

On the other hand, Dr. Vicente Vérez Bencomo, director general of the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV, in Spanish) and leader of the Soberana candidates, stressed how important was to vaccinate all children aging two years or older.

The Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing at the University of Havana, Raúl Ginovart, warned that Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Ávila provinces will remain as the pandemic epicenter.

Dr. Teresa Montero confirmed the validity of research on multiple organ damage and the significance of immediate treatment after diagnosis.

According to Ms. Montero, necropsies confirmed that the lung with permeability edema is the most hit and deadly organ, yet other organs such as kidney, liver, heart and blood vessels, blood, brain and ileum are also damaged.

The autopsy also found clear distinctions between different strains that have prevailed in Cuba: D614G, Beta, Delta and Omicron.
