Cuba’s demographic dynamics call for comprehensive actions – CEDEM

Havana, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) Hit by the decreased birth rate, aging and migratory balance, Cuba´s demographic dynamics calls for more comprehensive actions, Matilde Molina, deputy director of the Center for Demographic Studies (CEDEM, in Spanish) at the University of Havana, said on Tuesday.

The specialist laid stress on the need to articulate policies for this issue and youth in the country, as well as the macro-project for human development, equity and social justice by 2030, a mission prioritized by the country’s authorities.

Speaking at the International Congress of Children, Adolescence and Youth, in session from Tuesday to Thursday at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC), Ms. Molina claimed that Cuba presents a “demographic transition”, following 44 years below generational replacement.

According to 2021, trend continued towards reinforcing levels of demographic aging and the decreased number of inhabitants, in a nation that is expected to be among the oldest in Latin America by 2050.

In this regard, Ms. Molina referred to the need to roll out actions to boost levels of births and care for the elderly.
