Cuban lawmakers assess economic progress

Cuba, parlamento, debates, estrategia, económica
Havana, May 14 (Prensa Latina) On the opening day of the 5th Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly (Parliament) Cuban lawmakers are assessing today the implementation of the economic and social strategy in the post-Covid-19 pandemic.

They are debating this key issue for the country over a report of Deputy Prime Minister and head of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil, who rendered an account on the results of the economy so far and the projections for the rest of the year.

The Cuban Government forecast a 4% growth of its gross domestic product in 2022, despite the tense and exceptional economic situation the country is experiencing due to the tightening of the US blockade and the crisis caused by Covid-19.

The legislative agenda for this Saturday also includes presentation of the results of the popular consultation on the new Family Code, which will be submitted to a referendum called by Parliament itself.

The more than 600 deputies that make up the island’s legislative body will discuss, too, and vote eight bills that give legal continuity to the 2019 Constitution.

This process and the analysis of control actions on agencies of the central administration of the State and provincial governments will also be on the table for discussion in the session that will run until Monday, May 16.

As a background to this extraordinary session, 11 working commissions of the Assembly worked on Friday, in which the opinions on draft laws were approved and other agreements were reached on the progress of social and economic programs.
