mujeres-reunidas
Havana, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament, Robert Biedron, today congratulated Cuba for the gender equality achieved.

Speaking at the digital forum Feminine leadership, transformations to promote gender equality, the deputy to the European Parliament expressed his satisfaction for sharing the debate space and for working together with the National Assembly of People’s Power of the island (parliament) in after female empowerment.

He recognized the work carried out by the Caribbean nation in fundamental spheres such as political representation, and pointed out that Cuba ranks second internationally in terms of women’s participation in the Legislative.

She considered the fact of exchanging experiences in this field to be very important, and commented that the commission she directs maintains a permanent commitment to gender equality, starting from promoting that it be a permanent issue in the functioning of the European institutions and in the laws enacted.

The issue should be not only at the political level, but also at the administrative level, he pointed out, adding that the most important thing is to create spaces for women to feel safe and confident in respecting their rights.

For this, he added, it is essential to educate the entire society, and to contribute and support their hard fight for equality.

The first thing is to recognize that we have a problem and denounce the violations that occur, because in various places women still fight against violence and discrimination, he said.

Likewise, he maintained that the international economic crisis affects them in a very particular way, something that those who make decisions must take into account, since one of the key points of action must be linked to their economic independence.

We must create spaces of freedom and respect for their rights, he affirmed, and valued that what has been achieved in Cuba should be extended to the entire world.

Much remains to be done, he specified and thanked the possibility of working together.

The virtual forum, convened by the Commission for Attention to Youth, Children and Equal Rights for Women of the Cuban Parliament, and the Federation of Cuban Women, was attended by deputies from the Caribbean nation and European representatives.
