US energy prices hit 41-year high

Washington, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) The price of electricity in the United States increased 15.8 percent in August compared to the same month of 2021, the highest level in 41 years, the Labor Department reported today.

According to the government entity, natural gas bills rose 33 percent compared to the same month last year, after a slight decline in July.

The Department specifies that despite the contraction in gasoline and fuel oil prices, total costs are 24 percent above the levels of the eighth month of 2021.

The value of electricity increased incessantly due to the increase in natural gas and coal, as the costs of both energies increased amid rising inflation and the energy crisis in Europe generated by the set of coercive measures imposed by the West and other countries – including the United States – to Russia after the start of the military operation in Ukraine.

Another important element in the rise in prices could have been the intense summer that prompted homes and businesses in most of the lower 48 states to use air conditioning, and increase energy use to record levels in the third quarter, according to the Energy Information Administration of the northern country.
