Over 300 Colombian children died of hunger in 2021

Bogota, Dec 23 (Prensa Latina) At least 306 children aged under five passed away of hunger and malnutrition in Colombia in 2021, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) reported on Friday.

According to DANE´s report, hunger and malnutrition death toll increased last year, compared to 2020, and most of these occurred in departments with higher poverty rates.

DANE detailed that Colombia´s child malnutrition mortality rate was 7.8% per 100,000 children aged under five in 2021, while in 2020 there were 265 deaths (6.7%).

The two departments reporting highest malnutrition child death toll were Chocó (89%), La Guajira (55.3%), and Vichada (50.2%). The Colombian government is currently promoting a series of reforms, such as the Agrarian Reform, for a better food security in the country.
