Called Great Wetland Park, the idea emerged to strengthen and diversify conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystem’s natural resources due to the viried plants and animals in the area.
Yuney Cruz, project head, said that another of purposes was the revival of vulnerable community El Embarcadero, cloe to the Laguna de la Leche (Milk Lagoon), in Morón Municipality.
Cruz emphasized specialists carry out intense community work focused on enhancing environmental education in local children and teens through various activities to increase their love for nature and responsibility to protect it.
The Northern Wetlands of Ciego de Avila is a Ramsar Site and covers over 226,875 hectares in different municipalities including Bolivia, Primero de Enero, Morón and Chambas.
Wetlands are ecosystems that home a rich biological diversity of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, guaranteeing diverse water resources, food and other services, in addition to playing a key role in mitigating climate change.
