Haiti’s Gheskio Center closes after kidnapping of two employees

Port-au-Prince, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) Haiti´s Gheskio Center, an institution in charge of researching and treating infectious diseases, called off activities on Wednesday until further notice in protest against kidnapping of two employees.

Dr. Carl Frédérick Duchatelier and community health worker Kettia Juste were kidnapped on Tuesday by armed individuals.

It has been the second time in a month that Juste was kidnapped after armed individuals kidnapped her on February 9.

The Federation of Women’s Organizations for Equal Human Rights condemned that Gheskio’s employees for some time now have been victims of kidnapping.

The platform warned that Gheskio Center’s closure puts hundreds of thousands of people living with HIV at risk, and reminded Haitian government that restoring national security was major motivation for reaching a political agreement.

So far this year, over a hundred people have been deprived of liberty in Haiti as a result of the rise in violence by gangs operating mainly in the capital.

The Government has reiterated to the international community the request to deploy foreign troops to contain gangs.
