Cuban science focuses on food sovereignty

Camagüey, Cuba, Mar 27 (Prensa Latina) Science in terms of Cuba's food sovereignty is the priority in government development plans, created in the University of Camagüey among the leading entities.

According to the announcement on its official Internet portal, the first institution of its kind founded by the Cuban Revolution is leading, together with its Belgian counterparts in Antwerp and Ghent, the project Improvement of milk production potential through the introduction of an animal health management program in Camagüey.

The publication points out that “with four years of duration, this project developed between the faculties of Computer Sciences and Agricultural Sciences of the University of Camagüey, intends to introduce high-tech equipment to increase efficiency in milk production.”

In one of the municipalities with the longest cattle-raising tradition in Cuba, Jimaguayú, and where the Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, promoted the dairy basin project in the 1980s, a technology has been applied to animals to increase the production.

With a strong contribution to Food Sovereignty, Finca las Marinas has already effectively installed this collar technology on 50 cows, a tool that functions similar to pedometers, electronic devices that allow physical activity to be measured, says the text. “The project also implies actions to control the health of the herd, improvements in reproductive indicators and, above all, a plan of training activities for managers and producers, which will be taught by professors and students of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences,” according to digital publishing.

In the largest region of the country, the project improves cow’s milk production potential by introducing a health management program in dairy herds, allows us to glimpse improvements in livestock potential, the source notes.

The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture also places great hopes in the short term on the international Livestock Development Project (Prodegan).

The latter is financed by the French Development Agency and with an extension date in a first phase until May 2024, the program covers four municipalities in the central-eastern region, the one with the highest milk contribution to the country.
