Tashkent, May 10 (Prensa Latina) After sweeping the preliminary rounds, Cuba plummeted on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, after several of its top boxing stars lost their fights.

Three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez lost 1-4 to Mongolia’s Chinzorig Baatarsukh in the 63.5-kilogram category.

Debutant Jorge Cuellar lost by unanimous 0-5 count to India’s Nishant Dev, in the 71-kg division.

Later, in the 80-kg category, the famous Arlen Lopez lost 3-4 to China’s Tanglatihan Touohetaerbieke.

Finally, Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullojonov defeated Olympic champion Julio Cesar La Cruz, 4-1, in the 92-kg division.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Claro (48) and Saidel Horta (57) won for Cuba and secured their pass to the semifinals, in addition to guaranteeing -at least- the bronze medals.

Claro swept Scotland’s Bashir Aqeel and Horta defeated Kazakhstan’s Serik Termizhanov, runner-up in the last World Championship, in a 5-0 decision.

The world championships will be held at the Humo Arena in Tashkent until May 14.
