Syria appoints permanent representative to Arab League

Damascus, May 31 (Prensa Latina) President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree on Wednesday in which he appointed Hussam el-Din Ala, former permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, as Syria's delegate to the Arab League.

This appointment comes nearly a month after the decision to readmit Syria to this regional organization after almost 12 years of suspension.

According to the decree, the new representative to the Arab League will also be head of the Syrian diplomatic mission in Cairo.

El-Din Ala is a native of Aleppo, and he worked in the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for nearly three decades.

He was the Permanent Representative of Syria to the Office of the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva for eight years.

The new representative was also an ambassador to Vatican City and Spain and worked at the Syrian mission to the United Nations in New York between 1996 and 2001.
