Suspects of subversion arrested in Sierra Leone

Freetown, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The headquarters of the Sierra Leonean Police announced the arrest of 19 people, 14 military, three officers of that body and two civilians, suspected of involvement in subversive acts, according to reports here.

The detainees are under investigation said Police Inspector General William Fayia Sellu. He also stated that eight of the military personnel arrested are lieutenants and majors, six are privates and sergeants; eight people, five military personnel and three police officers, are wanted for questioning.

The information is linked to a series of arrests made by the police last week of people accused of “planning violent attacks during the anniversary of the violent protests of August 2022 which left 33 dead in this capital and other cities in the country.

The detainees “were working to undermine the peace and tranquility of the state and planned to use the peaceful protests scheduled for this week to unleash violent attacks against state institutions and peaceful citizens,” according to the official.

He assured that the authorities are “in full control of the situation and that security measures were reinforced throughout the country”.
