Ecuador’s CNE acknowledges inconsistency of online vote

Quito, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s National Electoral Council (CNE) acknowledged Thursday there were minutes with numerical inconsistencies in the online vote, on August 20 elections here.

CNE’s Deputy Chair Enrique Pita showed astonishment at this type of error, considering it “impossible” since results should have been automatic with the online system.

Such digital method that the CNE used in the voting for Ecuadorians abroad, was attacked from seven countries, Pita stated.

However, Pita did not describe the minutes with inconsistencies as fraud, and called them “a system failure that is not benefiting anyone, but is annulling an electoral process.”

The overseas elections for presidential binomial (president and vice president) and the popular consultation on oil extraction in Yasuni will not be repeated because although the votes were null and void, their numbers do not affect the total results, the CNE specified.

The CNE’s briefing referred that Anteproyectos S.C. Company in charge of the online voting support informed them that the system suffered a cybernetic attack but when they carried out the elections they detected minutes with inconsistencies, less votes (valid, blank and void) than voters.

Ecuador will define president in a runoff election on October 15 between Luisa Gonzalez, representing the Citizen Revolution, who obtained 33.61% of the votes, and Daniel Noboa, belonging to the National Democratic Action alliance, who got 23.47%.
