Guatemala declares three-month health emergency due to dengue fever

Guatemala City, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Health and Social Assistance (Mspas) of Guatemala decreed from today for three months a national health emergency due to the increase of 150% of dengue cases.

The epidemic caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito affects all age and sex groups, the ministry said in an agreement published in the official newspaper Diario de Centroamérica.

In a press conference this morning, Mspas described that there are 12,263 infected people in the country and 22 deaths, most of the infections and deaths in children under 14 years of age, it said. In view of the situation, it announced actions throughout the territory, mainly in the departments with more cases detected, such as fumigation and cleaning to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, also transmitters of zika and chikungunya.

It explained that periodic evaluations will be carried out to determine the progress made, while the emergency may be extended if the circumstances that gave rise to it persist.

The agency estimates that the year will end with 18 or 19 thousand cases, which means an increase of 152% compared to the 2022 scenario, which ended with 4 thousand infected by dengue.

Centralized and decentralized public institutions, autonomous, semi-autonomous, private, non-governmental and community organizations should collaborate with the promotion, prevention and crisis management actions.
