20 people killed in Chilean Fiestas Patrias accidents

Santiago de Chile, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) A total of 20 people died Tuesday in Chile in traffic accidents reported during the Fiestas Patrias activities, when family members take advantage of the holiday to go on a trip.

According to the Carabineros police, the number of deaths is lower by nearly 40% than that of the previous year.

In some 90,000 controls conducted on the highways, the police arrested over 450 people for DUI.

This is a worrying figure because those who drive under these conditions not only put their own lives at risk, but also the lives of other people who have nothing to do with their irresponsibility, declared Colonel Emilio Teixidor.

Chile´s police officers also fined about 1,400 drivers for infractions, including exceeding speed limits or not paying attention to road signs.
