Cubans debate inclusiveness in management of technologies

Matanzas, Cuba, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) The need to promote inclusiveness in the technological management to achieve intersectionality is a topic on debate at the opening session of the Accessible America event, which is taking place in Varadero beach.

According to the Program Coordinator of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in America, Ana Veneroso, working on digital inclusion constitutes a premise that the Accessible America Platform has worked on for ten years.

Analyzing the needs of each country in relation to issues such as access to technologies, the use of connectivity in different social areas and the role of women are vital elements so that all people, according to their abilities, are participants in the communication, he noted.

Veneroso stated that the role of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in today’s society is essential, in many nations of the world there are projects that enhance the management and access of technologies although there are still distances among countries in terms of use.

The coordinator noted that one-third of the world’s population does not access or adequately use the Internet and the multiple digital platforms, promote conditions of technological equality in which there is leadership of women, new generations and people with disabilities. Disability is a purpose of Accessible America.

Cuban Deputy Communication Minister Ernesto Rodríguez explained that in the ten years of Accessible America in Cuba, the country has established more collaborative and inclusive processes and currently 45 percent of the jobs in the sector are women.

Rodríguez pointed out that closing the digital divide that exists even on a global scale becomes a challenge with events like these. In Cuba, in recent years, the management and use of technologies has increased significantly since it represents a commitment by the country to contribute to the population’s digital inclusion and properly use the tools in the virtual world.

The 2023 Accessible America Regional Event, which will run from today until next November 10, will have among its spaces one for the interpretation of local sign language and will provide a training opportunity in ICT accessibility for the sake of the continent to continue its development in this area.
