Turkish Parliament postpones vote on Sweden’s NATO accession

Ankara, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) Türkiye's Parliament postponed on Thursday a vote on Sweden's accession protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), one of the last steps for that country's entry into the bloc.

The agenda of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee debated this document, which, along with Hungary’s approval, are the final steps so that Sweden becomes the Alliance’s 32nd member.

According to the Committee’s chairman, Fuat Oktay, the decision was taken because “the issue under discussion has not been clarified” and, as he explained, “negotiations are not sufficiently mature,” Anatolia reported.

In October, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent the issue of NATO membership to the Eurasian Parliament, the body responsible for the final approval.

The process started at the NATO Madrid Summit held last year at the request of Finland and still depends on Budapest’s approval even if Ankara endorses it.
