Cuban Parliament debates current problems and possible solutions

Havana, Dec 20 (Prensa Latina) The 2nd Period of the 10th Legislature of the Cuban Parliament is on Wednesday debating the country's current problems and what is being done to solve them.

This was expressed by the president of the National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament), Esteban Lazo, who stated that this new meeting of the legislative body takes place in a complex social and political scenario, with an impact on the functioning of institutions in all sectors, particularly in the people’s daily life.

Such a panorama is the result, first of all, of the effects of the intensified economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, with the objective of increasing pressure, promoting subversion and defeating the Cuban Revolution, he added.

At the opening session of the 2nd Period on Wednesday, the parliamentary leader noted that these kinds of meetings held in July raised the people’s expectations regarding the Parliament’s role, due to the discussion of economic and social issues.

Lazo stressed that the current process focuses in particular on the need for everyone’s participation in the fulfillment of the necessary tasks to mitigate the current situation that the country is going through.

At Havana’s International Conference Center, the parliamentary president stated that during the sessions, scheduled until next Friday, lawmakers will also seek to achieve consensus on what should be done in the economic and social sphere, and insist on how to improve material and human potential.

Other purposes of the meeting are to reaffirm the responsibility of institutions, the territories (particularly the municipalities) and the people in complying with what has been agreed on each of the issues, and to call for the participation of everyone in people’s control, discipline, citizen’s solidarity and the defense of the values of the Revolution.

Likewise, he highlighted the importance of a better understanding about what the economic plan and the State budget mean for the life of the nation as support for social programs, and for deputies to participate and get involved in the discussions, the search for new proposals and the subsequent control of the issues discussed.
