Indigenous leaders demand suspension of 2024 budget in Guatemala

Guatemala, Dec 20 (Prensa Latina) Mayan indigenous leaders on Tuesday demanded the definitive suspension of Guatemala's criticized 2024 Budget Law, following the provisional injunction granted on Monday by the Constitutional Court (CC).

The provisions of that decree not only affect the Government, but the population in general by subtracting millions from the funds allocated to different items, including those corresponding to health care, Angelina Aspuac, who represents the National Weavers Movement, stated.

“The 2024 budget threatens human rights and constitutional precepts, affects the right to life, food, justice and comprehensive development,” she noted at a press conference.

Therefore, the CC considered these aspects as valid, as well as the omission on the part of the Congress plenary to handle an adequate distribution, Aspuac commented.

The leader underscored that the ancestral authorities and social organizations that request the injunction did so to guarantee the common good and the defense of the rights of Guatemalans.

Aspuac asked the CC to grant the final injunction and suspend the approved budget, which only benefits the corrupt and will extort the incoming Executive.
