China urges U.S. not to intervene in Taiwan elections

Beijing, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) China urged the United States not to intervene "in any way" in the upcoming elections in Taiwan and to reject the alleged independence of the island.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning urged Washington to handle carefully and properly the issues related to that region, stop official exchanges and stop sending wrong signals to the secessionist forces.

According to the spokeswoman, if the United States really wants to maintain peace and stability in the Straits, “it should clearly oppose Taiwan independence and support peaceful reunification.”

Mao recalled that the One China principle constitutes a general consensus accepted by the international community, while separatism “is a path destined to failure”.

Taiwan is getting ready for the elections for the leadership of the island scheduled for tomorrow, in which Lai Ching-te, current vice-president and candidate for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is one of the favorites.

Recently, China’s Foreign Ministry described him as a separatist and troublemaker, capable of dragging with his actions “towards the danger of a military conflict”.

Beijing expressed its hope that the Taiwanese will see the extreme harm of the DPP’s policy, the grave danger posed by Lai and “make the right decision at the crossroads of China-Taiwan relations.”
