Argentine government seeks to approve project despite rejection

Buenos Aires, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Argentina seeks to reach agreements in the Chamber of Deputies in order to approve the "Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines" project, also known as the Omnibus Law, despite the rejection of social and union organizations.

According to the president of the lower house of Congress, Martin Menem, the block of 38 legislators of La Libertad Avanza is working to reach the necessary agreements and have a majority opinion ready for Tuesday during a plenary session of the General Legislation and Constitutional Affairs, Budget and Finance commissions.

Based on Télam news agency, Last Friday, the Government of Javier Milei decided to extend the extraordinary sessions until February 15th and is accelerating contacts with dialogue-oriented sectors of the opposition to try to approve the initiative on Thursday, after a national strike convened by the General Confederation of Labor.

According to Télam, Menem, Interior Minister Guillermo Francos and presidential advisor Santiago Caputo met with deputies of Propuesta Republicana, Hacemos Coalición Federal and Innovación Federal.

A possible agreement would include limiting the period of validity of the emergency, not increasing withholdings to the provinces and eliminating the delegated powers in matters of defense, social, pension and health, among other reforms.
