Arab Parliament condemns Milei’s decision to put embassy in Jerusalem

Cairo, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) The Arab Parliament condemned President Javier Milei's decision to move the Argentine embassy in Israel to the city of Jerusalem, pointing out that it violates international law.

“The legal, historical and religious status of Jerusalem is not subject to review, and any step in that direction represents a flagrant violation of international law,” the organization stressed.

The Arab Parliament also estimated that the measure ignores the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, it also undermines the two-state solution and encourages Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to continue its attacks against the civilian population in the occupied territories.

“We call on [President Milei] to reverse his decision, which would reinforce the occupation, and we urge him to follow the path of the South American countries that defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people,” the Parliament stressed.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 war and annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move that was never recognized by most of the international community.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump transferred the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a decision that sparked the anger of Palestinians and Muslim nations. This US move is maintained by his successor, Joe Biden.

Since then, some countries have followed Washington’s lead, although most of the international community maintains its embassies in Tel Aviv and considers eastern Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state.
