Mid-intensity earthquake shakes Lima

Lima, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) An earthquake of medium intensity was felt on Thursday in the Peruvian capital and shocked the population of the city of about 10 million inhabitants, who evacuated homes and offices as a precaution.

The tremor, of magnitude 5.4, shook the central coastal region of the country at 15:53 hours, with no personal or material damage reported, although in the district of Ate, in the east of the city, there were rock slides from the hillsides that obstructed traffic on an avenue.

Its epicenter was located on the seabed in front of the coastal city of Huaral, 75 kilometers from Metropolitan Lima and 57 kilometers deep, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP)informed.

The IGP’s President Hernando Tavera called on the population to follow the preventive instructions of the Civil Defense system, given the certainty that the central Peruvian coast could suffer at any time a large earthquake of magnitude 8.8.

In view of such situation, the Civil Defense periodically conducts evacuation and location exercises in safe places, as well as actions to be taken after an earthquake.
