President Mayardit welcomes IGAD’s Executive Secretary

Juba, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit welcomed on Thursday the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)’s Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, who completes today a working visit to the country.

Gebeyehu revealed on his X account that on the meeting with Mayardit, he underlined the ongoing collaboration between IGAD and Juba as a member State with the aim of promoting regional cooperation and development.

On the second working day, the IGAD’s senior representative had paid courtesy visits to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation James Pitia Morgan and the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Gender and Youth Cluster Group Mama Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior.

The visitor handed over a mobile health laboratory, screening and quarantine equipment to the South Sudanese Ministry of Health in the presence of its head Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, which is financed through the EU-IGAD Covid-19 project.

The United Nations Office for Project Services, the delegations of the European Union (EU) in Djibouti, South Sudan and the African Union, as well as the Directorate General for International Partnerships of the European bloc further intervened for the support.

According to a press release, the two-day visit comes in the context of the Authority’s facilitating role in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on Conflict Resolution in South Sudan, which prescribes essential tasks necessary to boost a strong democracy and a sustainable political transition for the country.

The text specified that IGAD, in partnership with other stakeholders, remains steadfast in its commitment to support Juba as a member State in the pursuit of the country’s broader social, political, economic and developmental aspirations.
