Cholera outbreak worsens crisis in Kenya due to flooding

Nairobi, May 8 (Prensa Latina) Given the critical humanitarian and health situation generated by the downpours that flood areas of this capital and other localities, Kenyans today fear the spread of a cholera epidemic that has dozens of cases, according to official figures.

In addition to the floods due to the flow of rivers and lakes due to the copious rains that have shaken Kenya since last March, there is also the fear of a cholera epidemic due to the contamination of the waters, an ideal environment for contagion with the disease, which can be lethal.

In Tana county, one of the most affected by the floods, 44 cases of cholera were reported (…) the government mounted a multisectoral emergency response, said a spokesperson for the Epidemiology department of the Kenyan Ministry of Health.

The health situation is complicated by the closure of 14 health centers and the shortage of facilities for purifying the necessary water, added the informant.

According to updated reports, floods and associated disasters such as mudslides caused about 240 deaths, injuries to around 170, the destruction of homes, businesses and crops, as well as extensive damage to road infrastructure, including several vital bridges.

Precipitation also affects countries in the south of the continent, in Tanzania due to the passage of a cyclone and in Burundi, as well as in Kenya, due to the validity of the El Niño phenomenon and the damage to the climate caused by the predatory action of humans.
