Uruguayan police mount raids after multiple homicide

Montevideo, Jun 1 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan Interior Ministry unfolded on Saturday that the police made five arrests for the quadruple homicide in the capital's Macarana town, where security forces have mounted several raids.

The multiple crime, which seems to be from other latitudes, is part of a climate of growing violence, which is reported daily in the media with information on homicides.

According to the Interior Ministry, the incident occurred on Thursday, after 11 p.m., when a woman informed to 911 that shots had been fired at her house and that her son had been injured.

A police team arrived at the scene and confirmed the facts. A doctor asserted the death of the four victims: a 40-year-old man, two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, respectively, and an 11-year-old boy.

Another 17 year-old adolescent was taken to the Hospital del Cerro with “multiple gunshot wounds in the thorax, legs and arms, having a life-threatening condition,” according to the police report.

The Director of the National Police Jose Manuel Azambuya explained that the 40-year-old man who passed away had a previous record for robbery. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old was the son of his ex-partner while the 17-year-old who is in the hospital is his son. Notwithstanding, the 11-year-old was not related to either of them but lived in the neighborhood. “We are worried about the parents, what was he doing there?”Azambuya wondered.

On Friday, the police had launched seven raids and are still looking for people linked to the homicide, which rekindled concerns and debates on insecurity. The first hypotheses point to a vendetta due to drugs or weapons.
