The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, met with Abbas at the Moncloa Palace, to whom he reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the Palestinian people and to the two-state solution as the only way to put an end to the Middle East conflict.
Sánchez took the opportunity to call once again for a cease-fire that would put an end to the violence in Gaza, guarantee humanitarian assistance to the civilian population and allow the release of all hostages.
He also recalled that the precautionary measures established by the International Court of Justice calling for a halt to the Israeli military offensive “must be complied with”.
Likewise, the head of the Spanish Executive stressed that Abbas’ visit, the first official one since Madrid recognized the State of Palestine, constitutes “a very important milestone in the history of our two countries”.
At his turn, in a press conference at the Moncloa, Abbas requested that the Spanish capital host a future Peace Conference, in an explicit recognition of the Madrid Peace Conference of 1991, which served as the beginning of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.
