10th Congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba begins

Havana, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) is holding its 10th Congress on November 1st and 2nd with the firm conviction of being at the service of the Homeland.

The event will be a propitious space to discuss in depth agreements and approaches discussed in meetings held throughout the country, with the participation of writers and artists from all provinces.

In the words of the president of UNEAC, Marta Bonet, the Congress will be a place for the confluence of ideas, in which the theme “Culture is the Homeland,” by renowned Cuban intellectual Fernando Ortiz, will guide the essence of the exchanges. She also said that the event will articulate approaches and concerns expressed in the spaces developed from the base, which will allow an evaluation of the interrelation between the artistic avant-garde and cultural institutions.

UNEAC also shared the opinions of renowned members on social media

UNEAC’s honorary president, Miguel Barnet, said that “One has to love culture as one loves their Homeland, because the Homeland is the entire family. Culture is the Homeland, the Homeland is humanity, but humanity is our home, which we have to protect, care for, safeguard… and love.”

The director of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto, said that “UNEAC has never allowed itself to be pigeonholed in union issues, it has defended the rights of writers and artists, but it has always defended, above all, the rights of the nation and the needs of culture.” For this reason, he considered that “it is a time when UNEAC’s space is vital.”

Prominent actress Verónica Lynn stressed that “Culture is everything we are and think, how we act. I believe that “Homeland and Culture” go hand in hand, walking together. The 10th Congress is most needed in these critical moments. Sharing ideas and criteria is extremely important.”

One of the outstanding debates announced for this event is the Program against Cultural Colonization, which will be discussed in the plenary session: “National Identity and Cultural Colonization.”
