Rome, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) A new Cuban documentary on Italo Calvino, a significant Italian writer born in the island in 1923, and whose work built a cultural bridge between both nations, will be screened Rome next Saturday, according to a statement today.

“Letters from Calvino”, a film directed by Cuban filmmaker Esther Barroso, features the Cuban-Italian singer and composer Monica Marziota, who leads the plot through poetic and musical references, amid a dreamy atmosphere which ultimately reveals the roots and soul of the outstanding writer.

Marziota follows the trail left by the author, who died in 1985 at 62, in an intimate journey that takes her to Havana, his birthplace, as well as to the Italian capital and the coastal city of San Remo, in the northern region of Liguria, where Calvino he lived for most of his life.

The film was chosen for screening at the Cervantes Institute’s Ibero-American Film Festival, at 3:30 p.m. local time on November 23, in the Cinecittá Room of the Casa del Cine in Rome.

Barroso, born in 1968 and graduated in journalism in 1990, has cultivated a distinguished career in her country and directed, among other documentaries, Espejos: una historia en La Habana, about the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano.

For her part, Marziota, a native of Havana, with a Cuban mother and an Italian father, comes from a family of musicians and intellectuals and her maternal grandfather was Julio Valdés, a singer, composer and popular music director.

After its screening in Rome, the film will be shown again on Tuesday, November 26 at 3:30 p.m. local time at the historic Cinema Rouge et Noir, in the city of Palermo, in the southern region of Sicily.
