Pope Francis calls for reconciliation and peace after Gaza ceasefire

Vatican City, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) Pope Francis today expressed his wish that after the ceasefire in Gaza comes into effect this Sunday, reconciliation and permanent peace can be achieved in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

In his words after the Angelus prayer, pronounced at noon hours from the window of his study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace before more than 20 thousand faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father referred to this truce, which began this morning, and should last six weeks in its first phase.

The Bishop of Rome expressed his gratitude to all the mediators who made possible the agreement for a cease-fire, and in general “to all the parties involved in this important achievement,” which put an end to Tel Aviv’s attacks on the Strip, where more than 46,500 Palestinians were killed.

“I hope that what has been agreed will be immediately respected by the parties and that all the hostages can finally return home” as well as the “humanitarian aid will reach the people of Gaza even more quickly and in greater quantities since it is so urgently needed,” Francis said.

The pontiff also expressed his hope that the political authorities of Israel and Palestine, with the help of the international community, “can reach the right solution for the two states” and called for, “everyone to say: yes to dialogue, yes to reconciliation, yes to peace”.
