Murillo met with the UN Under-Secretary General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, Miroslav Jenca, with whom he discussed issues related to the implementation of the 2016 Peace Agreement and others that concern continental stability, according to statements released here by his ministry.
The diplomat said he and the UN official dealt with possible solutions to the situation in Catatumbo, where armed clashes between the ELN and the 33rd Front have left nearly 80 dead and more than 11,000 displaced, according to official sources.
He added that a very important message was transmitted by the Secretary General, António Guterres, not to close the door to peace, even in the midst of difficulties.
At this point, the foreign minister declared that the Government insists that there must be a substantial change in the ELN’s attitude, “because what it has done in Catatumbo is unacceptable and we condemn it.”
The two high officials also discussed the proposals for cooperation between Colombia and Haiti and that they will seek, with the support of the United Nations organization, to invite the rest of the Latin American and Caribbean region to support a peaceful solution to the conflict that afflicts that Caribbean nation.
Murillo and his delegation also attended the Security Council on Middle East issues, in which he reaffirmed his country’s position of supporting a definitive ceasefire in the war in Gaza.
He advocated the guarantee of the return of Israeli hostages and the release of the Palestinians held by Israel.
