Colombian foreign minister calls Trump’s stance against Cuba unfair

United Nations, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo on Wednesday described as incorrect and unfair the decision made by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to revoke Cuba's removal from the State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.

In statements to reporters, the foreign minister noted that, first of all, his country does not agree with the implementation of unilateral and extraterritorial policies such as Cuba’s inclusion on the aforementioned list.

He pointed out that this decision has a detrimental effect on citizens and limits the population’s access to the products necessary to meet their basic needs.

“Cuba’s inclusion on that list was obviously an unfair measure because it responded to a request from Colombia for support for the peace process that was being negotiated at the time, and it was because it had accepted that support that it ended up being included on that list,” he said.

We insist that the Government of the United States reconsider this type of decision and we will continue to advocate for Cuba to be excluded from that list because it is unfair, Murillo added.

Cuba, which is supporting the talks between the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), was designated as a nation that allegedly sponsors terrorism after rejecting a request from the previous Colombian administration to hand over the insurgent negotiating party, something that it could not do in its capacity as guarantor of the process.

Cuba was included on the US list unilaterally in 2021, a few days after Donald Trump left the White House during his first term. On January 14, former President Joe Biden (2021-2025) announced the exclusion of Cuba from that designation, which Trump reversed six days later, on the same day he took office.

In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel commented that in an act of arrogance and contempt for the truth, the Republican reinstated the fraudulent designation of Cuba as a State sponsor of terrorism.

“It is not surprising. Its objective is to continue to strengthen the cruel economic war against Cuba for purposes of domination,” he noted.

On Wednesday, Colombia’s Cuba Solidarity Movement rejected the revocation of the measure and considered it an illegitimate act.

“The decision is not only unfair, but dangerous; re-incorporating Cuba on this list means perpetuating the policies of isolation and blockade, condemning the entire country to face new and more limitations in its development, access to essential resources and, above all, in its international, political, financial and commercial relations” the text said.
