More than 100 injured by M23 attack in Minova, DRC

Kinshasa, 22 (Prensa Latina) More than 100 people were injured in Minova, South Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), due to the attack of the March 23 Movement (M23), which today maintains control over the city.

According to a report of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released on Wednesday, at least two people were killed when shells fell on the city last Sunday, and about 113 people were wounded in the general hospital.

The source said they were transferred to Goma, in the province of North Kivu, for emergency treatment.

The day before, the spokesman of the Armed Forces of the DRC, General Sylvain Ekenge, confirmed the advance of the M23, with Rwandan support, both in Minova and Bweremana, this last one in North Kivu; as well as he affirmed that the combats ‘against the aggressors’ continue on all fronts.

OCHA is concerned about the situation of the displaced, as from January 4 to 20 at least 178,000 people had fled the fighting in North Kivu for Minova, but with the new developments many have been forced to move back to safer places.

The situation in Minova remains tense, and the intensity of the fighting has caused all those displaced from Kitalaga 1 and 2 sites flee to the towns of Kasunyu, Kitembo, Bwisha and Bulenga to seek refuge in surrounding schools,’ the report said.

The agency noted that due to the fighting, several humanitarian activities have been suspended and access is restricted on several routes.

There have also been reports of criminal acts targeting humanitarian workers and rapes against women and girls.
